Turn-based games are on their prime

Turn-based games have been increasing in popularity over the last few years, from indie titles like Sea of Stars to more ambitious projects like Expedition 33. These games have found their way to the masses with original mechanics, fresh ideas, and a mix of features that makes every title unique, even within the same category. Find out if any of these belong in your library.

What is the actual difference between turn-based combat, turn-based tactics, and turn-based strategy?

It mostly comes down to scale, positioning, and what you are managing:

  • Turn-Based Combat (Traditional): Focuses strictly on menu-driven unit abilities, party stats, and target selection. Positioning rarely matters, and you are usually taking down static lines of enemies in localized battles.
  • Turn-Based Tactics**: Centers almost entirely on spatial positioning and grid movement during a single battle. Cover, high ground, line of sight, and unit flanks matter just as much as your gear.
  • Turn-Based Strategy (TBS): Takes a high-level macro view. Instead of just controlling a few squad members in a fight, you manage entire empires, resource economies, tech trees, and map territories across a persistent campaign.

Should I start with tactical grid combat or classic party-based RPGs?

If you like positioning, high ground, and map control, go with tactical grid combat. If you prefer focusing on character builds, synergy, and story progression, a classic party-based RPG will feel much better to start with.

Are these games too punishing if I make a bad character build early on?

Most recent releases include low-cost respec options or difficulty tweaks so you can experiment without ruining a multi-hour playthrough. Very few force you to restart completely just because you misallocated some stats early on.
